by Center for Health Policy and Law at Northeastern University School of Law

The "Annual Health Law Conference: Between Complacency & Panic: Legal, Ethical and Policy Responses to Emerging Infectious Diseases" was a one-day event held on April 14, 2017, at Northeastern University School of Law. Organized by the Center for Health Policy and Law in collaboration with the American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics, the conference received support from the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School.

The conference addressed critical issues related to emerging infectious diseases, focusing on developing effective, evidence-based, legally sound, and ethically appropriate policy responses. Key sessions included a keynote address by Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and panel discussions on topics such as vaccine development, reproductive and sexual rights, public health powers, and the role of health delivery systems.

Notable speakers featured at the event included Dr. John Auerbach, President and CEO of Trust for America's Health; Lawrence Gostin, Professor of Global Health Law at Georgetown Law; and Michelle Mello, Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. The conference also provided opportunities for networking among policymakers, practitioners, and academics dedicated to public health and legal policy.

This conference was particularly relevant for legal professionals, public health officials, policymakers, and academics interested in the intersection of law, ethics, and public health. Attendees gained valuable insights into the challenges posed by emerging infectious diseases and the development of appropriate legal and policy responses.
