Federalist Society National Lawyers Convention 2014

by Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies

The Federalist Society's 2014 National Lawyers Convention, held from November 13 to 15 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., was a premier gathering for legal professionals interested in conservative and libertarian perspectives on law and public policy. Organized by the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies, the event attracted over 1,000 attendees, including lawyers, judges, scholars, and policymakers.

The convention's theme, "Millennials, Equity, and the Rule of Law," addressed the challenges facing younger generations and explored legislative solutions. Key sessions included discussions on the origins and continuing legal influence of the Magna Carta, as well as debates on contemporary legal issues. The event featured a speech by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and the Barbara K. Olson Memorial Lecture delivered by John A. Allison, president and CEO of the Cato Institute.

Notable speakers included U.S. Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito, Senators Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey, former ACLU President Nadine Strossen, business executive Carly Fiorina, and former BB&T Corp. head John Allison. Academic panelists featured Richard Epstein, Chai Feldblum, Gail Heriot, Lucian Bebchuk, Jonathan Turley, Neal Katyal, and Randy Kennedy. The convention also provided ample networking opportunities, including luncheons, receptions, and the annual dinner featuring an interview with Justice Alito conducted by his former law clerk, Adam G. Ciongoli.

The convention was particularly beneficial for legal professionals, law students, and scholars interested in conservative and libertarian legal thought. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with leading figures in the legal field, participate in in-depth discussions on pressing legal issues, and expand their professional networks.
