Fourth Civil Justice Reform Summit

by IAALS (Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System)

The Fourth Civil Justice Reform Summit, organized by IAALS (Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System), convened on February 25–26, 2016, at the Cable Center on the University of Denver campus in Denver, Colorado. This summit aimed to bring together federal and state court judges, court administrators, attorneys, academics, and system users to discuss and strategize the next steps toward creating a more just, speedy, and inexpensive civil justice system.

Key topics addressed during the summit included the challenges of implementing recent federal rule amendments and anticipated recommendations from the Conference of Chief Justices Civil Justice Improvements Committee at the state level. Discussions focused on the importance of strong leadership within the bench and bar, the role of pilot projects in fostering innovation and cultural change, and the critical function of judges in managing cases effectively. Additionally, the summit emphasized the need for modernizing court infrastructure, investing in technology, and implementing comprehensive training programs to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the civil justice system.

The event featured a distinguished faculty comprising prominent figures such as Hon. Carolyn Kuhl, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, who delivered the keynote address. Other notable speakers included Hon. David G. Campbell, District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona; Hon. Lee H. Rosenthal, District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas; and William C. Hubbard, Immediate Past President of the American Bar Association. The summit provided ample opportunities for networking, including a cocktail reception and dinner, facilitating meaningful connections among attendees.

This summit was particularly beneficial for judges, court administrators, attorneys, academics, and other stakeholders involved in the civil justice system. Attendees gained valuable insights into the latest reforms, shared best practices, and collaborated on strategies to implement changes effectively, ultimately contributing to the advancement of a more efficient and equitable civil justice system.
