Statewide Civil Legal Aid Technology Conference 2016

The 2016 Statewide Civil Legal Aid Technology Conference, convened by the Permanent Commission on Access to Justice, brought together leaders and technologists from legal aid providers, private law firms, law schools, corporations, and the Judiciary to promote collaborative, innovative, and sustainable technology to expand access to civil legal services. The conference aimed to educate civil legal services leaders across New York State on how technology can improve the delivery of legal services and the efficiency of their operations.

Key topics covered during the conference included the Statewide Access Portal Project, online consumer portal pilots, pro bono law firm IT initiatives, privacy by design, and human-centered design to build tools for access to justice. These sessions highlighted exciting technologies currently in use or within reach of the New York State civil legal aid community.

The conference featured notable speakers such as Glenn Rawdon, Program Counsel for Technology at the Legal Services Corporation; Michael Donnelly, Chief Information Officer at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP; and Ari Waldman, Associate Professor and Director of the Innovation Center for Law and Technology at New York Law School. These experts provided insights into innovative technologies and strategies to enhance access to justice.

The event was designed for civil legal services leaders, technologists, and stakeholders interested in leveraging technology to improve legal service delivery. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge technologies, share best practices, and collaborate on initiatives to enhance access to civil legal services across New York State.
