Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship in Legal Ethics Lecture

by Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University

The Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship in Legal Ethics Lecture Series is an esteemed annual event hosted by the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Established in 1989 to honor Howard Lichtenstein, a prominent labor law attorney and advocate for legal ethics education, the series brings together leading scholars and practitioners to discuss pressing issues in legal ethics and professional responsibility.

Each lecture addresses contemporary challenges and developments in the field of legal ethics. Recent topics have included the evolving role of lawyers in society, the impact of technology on legal practice, and the ethical responsibilities of government attorneys. For instance, the 2024 lecture by W. Bradley Wendel, titled "The New Legal Ethics," explored the shifting paradigms in legal ethics and the increasing scrutiny of lawyers' moral responsibilities.

The event typically features a keynote address followed by a question-and-answer session, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with experts. Notable past speakers have included Richard W. Painter, former chief White House ethics lawyer, and Andrew M. Perlman, a recognized authority on legal innovation and technology.

This lecture series is particularly beneficial for legal professionals, academics, and law students interested in the ethical dimensions of legal practice. Attendees gain valuable insights into current ethical debates and emerging trends, enhancing their understanding and application of ethical principles in their professional roles.
