CEL Biennial Lecture: 'Rules for Robots: Building Legal Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence'

The UCL Centre for Ethics and Law hosted its Biennial Lecture titled "Rules for Robots: Building Legal Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence" on June 18, 2019. The event featured Professor Gillian Hadfield from the University of Toronto as the keynote speaker, with Professor Richard Moorhead from UCL Laws serving as the chair.

The lecture addressed the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its integration into various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and transportation. Professor Hadfield emphasized the critical need for developing robust legal frameworks to ensure AI technologies align with societal goals and values. She highlighted the challenges posed by the swift evolution of AI and the inertia within existing legal and policy systems, advocating for prompt reforms to create effective regulatory tools that guarantee the safe and beneficial deployment of AI.

Gillian Hadfield is a Professor of Law and Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Toronto, focusing on innovative design for legal and dispute resolution systems, governance for artificial intelligence, and contract law and theory. She is also a Faculty Affiliate at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Center for Human-Compatible AI at UC Berkeley, and serves as Senior Policy Advisor at OpenAI.

Richard Moorhead

Professor of Law and Professional Ethics at University College London

Richard Moorhead is a Professor of Law and Professional Ethics at UCL Laws, specializing in legal ethics, regulation, and the legal profession. He has conducted extensive research on lawyers' ethics, access to justice, and the regulation of legal services.
