World Legal Summit 2019
The World Legal Summit 2019 was a global event held simultaneously in 23 countries, including Australia, aimed at fostering informed development for a globally sustainable future. The University of Queensland's TC Beirne School of Law, in collaboration with the Centre for Legal Innovation at The College of Law, hosted the Brisbane segment of the summit on August 1, 2019.
The summit addressed critical topics at the intersection of law and emerging technologies. Key sessions included "Identity and Personal Governance," focusing on redefining systems in the era of surveillance; "Autonomous Machines," discussing responsibility and liability versus accessibility and convenience; "Cybersecurity and Personal Data," exploring privacy protection against breaches; and "Data – The New Electricity or The Next Regulatory Nightmare?" examining data's role and regulatory challenges.
The event featured a series of presentations and panel discussions led by esteemed experts. Notable speakers included Bill Singleton, Partner at HWL Ebsworth; Dr. Alan Davidson, Senior Lecturer at UQ; Associate Professor Mark Burdon from QUT Law; and Dr. Mark Staples, Senior Principal Researcher at Data61 CSIRO. These sessions provided attendees with insights into the evolving legal landscape shaped by technological advancements.
The World Legal Summit 2019 was designed for legal professionals, academics, policymakers, and technologists interested in the confluence of law and technology. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with thought leaders, participate in discussions on pressing legal issues, and network with peers committed to shaping a sustainable legal future in the digital age.
