The General Counsel Insight Hour is a series of virtual events organized by The Economist Events, designed to support professionals navigating the rapidly evolving business, regulatory, legal, and operational landscapes. These sessions are particularly beneficial for those involved in their organization's crisis response teams, offering a platform to hear from peers across various sectors.

Each session focuses on pertinent topics such as protecting and enhancing corporate reputation and brand, and is conducted under the Chatham House rule to encourage open and candid discussions. The events feature insights from General Counsel and key members of crisis and continuity committees, sharing experiences, lessons learned, and strategies for future preparedness. Moderation is provided by representatives from The Economist's editorial team.

These one-hour webinars are open to individuals on organizational crisis and continuity committees, General Counsel, C-suite executives, and their direct reports. Participants have the opportunity to engage with industry leaders, gain valuable insights, and discuss strategies to effectively manage and enhance their organization's reputation and brand.

David Bateson

Senior Vice-President, Legal, Intellectual Property, Privacy and Sustainability at Canon

David Bateson joined Canon in 2006 to head the Europe, Middle East, and Africa legal team. Since then, he has taken on responsibility for intellectual property, sustainability, government affairs, and data privacy. Governance and risk management are also part of his remit. Mr. Bateson has worked in the electronics, IT-services, software, market-research, and legal sectors, in a range of corporate cultures including Japanese, US, Anglo-French, and British. He is a member of the Canon Europe Operations Committee and is involved in wider corporate activities such as mergers and acquisitions, transformation, customer insight, and mentoring. In April 2020, he joined the Board of Trustees of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), which is leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK and the cause of 18 deaths every day.

Francesca Porter

General Counsel at Onfido

Francesca Porter is General Counsel and executive team member at Onfido, a fast-growing AI company that digitally proves people’s real identities using a photo ID and facial biometrics. She possesses strong commercial skills with a sharp business focus. Ms. Porter is skilled in Commercial Law, Strategic Legal Advice, Commercial Litigation, Intellectual Property, IT Outsourcings, and Mergers & Acquisitions. She is experienced in deal negotiation, contract drafting, and legal project management.

Mark Maurice-Jones

General Counsel and Compliance Officer at Nestlé UK and Ireland

Mark Maurice-Jones leads a team of 15 staff dedicated to shaping the agenda of Nestlé UK & Ireland through proactive business partnerships and driving a culture of integrity. He is a member of the company’s Covid-19 Crisis Committee. Before Nestlé, Mr. Maurice-Jones worked for 15 years with Kimberly-Clark in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. He started his legal career as a competition lawyer with international law firms in London and Brussels.
