The inaugural Tsinghua-UNSW Joint Research Centre for International Commercial and Economic Law (JCICEL) Conference was held virtually on 21 September 2020. Organized by the JCICEL, a collaboration between Tsinghua University Law School and UNSW Law, the conference aimed to foster engagement among academics, practitioners, and the broader community on the theme "Law and Technology: International Regulations."

The conference featured two keynote presentations and two panel discussions. Professor Yuejiao Zhang, former Chair and Judge of the WTO Appellate Body, delivered a keynote on the necessity of an appeal system in international trade and investment dispute resolution. Professor Douglas Arner from the University of Hong Kong discussed the interplay between technology, geopolitics, and the evolution of the international monetary system.

Panel discussions covered topics such as intellectual property dispute resolution, unfair competition related to software disruption, and the regulation of technical behaviors in China. Other sessions addressed issues like foreign direct investment screening, the China-EU investment treaty negotiations, and the balance between control and openness in investment policies.

The conference provided valuable networking opportunities for legal professionals, scholars, and policymakers interested in the intersection of law and technology. Attendees had the chance to engage with leading experts, participate in Q&A sessions, and discuss emerging challenges and solutions in international commercial and economic law.
