The 2021 Innovations in Technology Conference (ITC21) was a virtual event organized by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) from January 12 to 14, 2021. This conference brought together technologists, legal aid advocates, court personnel, pro bono coordinators, and other professionals to showcase technology projects aimed at improving access to civil legal services for those most in need.
ITC21 featured more than 40 sessions covering a wide array of access-to-justice topics. Key themes included self-help technology, enhancing user experience, regulatory reform to expand access to justice, and the development of online portals designed to simplify and improve access to legal information and service providers. The conference also addressed how legal aid organizations and courts adapted technology in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event attracted over 900 participants from all 50 states, three U.S. territories, and five countries, setting a new attendance record. Notable sessions included a plenary panel discussion with LSC President Ron Flagg, Michigan Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack, and Larry Irving, President and CEO of the Irving Group, focusing on technology and access to justice from various perspectives. Additionally, the conference concluded with a live episode of LSC's "Talk Justice" podcast, featuring insights from legal technology leaders on innovation and access to justice.
ITC21 was particularly beneficial for technologists, legal aid advocates, court personnel, pro bono coordinators, and other professionals interested in leveraging technology to enhance access to justice. Attendees had the opportunity to network with a diverse community of colleagues, share ideas, and cultivate project concepts that could lead to future innovations in legal services delivery.
