AALS Conference on Clinical Legal Education 2022

by Association of American Law Schools

The 2022 AALS Conference on Clinical Legal Education, organized by the Association of American Law Schools, was held virtually from May 9 to 12, 2022. This annual event brought together over 1,150 legal educators to explore innovative approaches to clinical legal education under the theme "Lawyering with Creativity and for Equity."

The conference featured more than 350 speakers across over 150 sessions, covering a diverse range of topics. Key sessions addressed effective teaching methodologies, scholarship development, and collaboration with adjunct faculty. Specialized discussions delved into areas such as domestic violence, non-lawyer legal service programs, restorative justice, anti-surveillance advocacy, and antitrust law. The program aimed to equip educators with strategies to design equitable classroom environments, enhance student engagement, and foster a deeper understanding of equity and anti-racism as both skills and values.

In addition to the main sessions, the conference included a Workshop for New Law School Clinical Teachers, providing insights into experiential teaching and opportunities for new educators to connect with peers. The event also honored outstanding contributions to clinical legal education, with awards recognizing excellence in advocacy, scholarship, and public interest projects. Despite being held virtually, the conference facilitated informal networking events in various cities, allowing attendees to engage in person and discuss ideas presented during the sessions.

This conference was particularly beneficial for clinical law educators, legal scholars, and practitioners interested in advancing experiential learning and promoting equity within legal education. Attendees gained valuable insights into innovative teaching practices, engaged in meaningful discussions on pressing legal issues, and expanded their professional networks within the clinical legal education community.
