The Tenth Annual Symposium on the Law & Economics of Privacy & Data Security was held on June 3, 2022, at the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School in Arlington, Virginia. Organized by the Program on Economics & Privacy, the symposium convened leading experts to discuss pressing issues at the intersection of law, economics, privacy, and data security.

The event featured sessions on topics such as privacy policies under the new administration, the interplay between competition and consumer protection economics, and the phenomenon of dark patterns in online interfaces. Notable discussions included a fireside chat with FTC Commissioner Noah J. Phillips and a keynote address by Professor William E. Kovacic on antitrust policy transformation during the first year of the Biden administration.

Attendees had opportunities to engage with prominent figures in the field, including panelists from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies. The symposium provided a platform for networking and in-depth discussions on current challenges and developments in privacy and data security.

This symposium was particularly beneficial for legal professionals, policymakers, academics, and industry leaders interested in the evolving landscape of privacy and data security. Bruce H. Kobayashi is the Paige V. and Henry N. Butler Chair in Law and Economics at George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. He focuses on issues related to law and economics.

Carl Szabo

Vice President and General Counsel at NetChoice

As Vice President and General Counsel, Mr. Szabo analyzes, advocates, and testifies on tech-related legislative and regulatory initiatives relevant to online companies. He is also an adjunct professor of internet law at the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. Before joining NetChoice, Mr. Szabo was an intellectual property attorney at the law firm of Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon where he advised clients on privacy, Internet, e-commerce, and contractual matters.

David Sidi

J. Howard Beales III

Professor Emeritus of Strategic Management and Public Policy at The George Washington University School of Business

Dr. Beales has published numerous articles addressing a wide variety of consumer protection regulatory issues, including privacy, law and economics, and the regulation of advertising. From 2001 through 2004, he served as the Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission, where he was instrumental in redirecting the FTC’s privacy agenda to focus on the consequences of the use and misuse of consumer information. During his tenure, the Commission proposed, promulgated, and implemented the national Do Not Call Registry.

Jane Bambauer

Jane Bambauer is a professor of law at the University of Arizona.
