The 12th Constructal Law Conference, titled "Freedom, Design and Evolution," was held at the Energy Center of the Politecnico di Torino on September 21 and 22, 2023. This international event focused on the Constructal Law, a principle governing the evolution of design in both natural and human-made systems. The conference was chaired by Professor Umberto Lucia, with co-chair Giulia Grisolia, both from the Politecnico di Torino, and coordinated by Umit Gunes from Yildiz Technical University.
The conference covered a wide array of topics, including the physics of life, design in nature, evolutionary design with freedom, and various forms of evolution—geophysical, biological, social, technological, and more. Discussions also delved into thermodynamics, energy, power, economy, thermoeconomics, bioeconomy, circular economy, information, complexity, change, and the time arrow. Additional themes encompassed the role of human beings as part of nature, hierarchy, power laws, inequality, innovation, and the integration of natural and social sciences, as well as art and science.
The event featured a rich program with contributions from experts worldwide, fostering dialogue on the Constructal Law and its applications across engineering, physical, biomedical, environmental, social, economic, and chemical sciences, as well as its extension into art and creativity. Notably, the conference opened with a keynote lecture by Professor Adrian Bejan, the originator of the Constructal Law, titled "Vascular Materials: Predicting Design Evolution."
