The Africa Construction Law (ACL) Conference 2023, held on June 5 and 6 in Lagos, Nigeria, was a premier gathering for professionals in the infrastructure and energy sectors across Africa. Organized by Africa Construction Law, the conference focused on the theme "Construction Law in Africa: Navigating Turbulent Times," bringing together experts to discuss and address the challenges and developments in construction law within English-speaking, Francophone, and Lusophone African jurisdictions.
The conference featured comprehensive plenary sessions over two days, covering a wide array of topics pertinent to the construction industry. Key discussions included legal frameworks and standards in construction law and dispute resolution in Africa, strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of currency fluctuation, inflation, supply chain disruptions, and taxation on contracts and projects, as well as alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in the construction sector. Additionally, sessions emphasized capacity building and professional development in construction law and dispute resolution, and managing construction claims or disputes in Africa.
Attendees had the opportunity to engage with prominent legal and technical professionals, enhancing their networks and knowledge base. The event attracted a diverse group of participants, including contractors, employers, developers, financial institutions, government bodies, law firms, and expert consultancies from various jurisdictions such as London, Paris, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Zambia, Cameroon, and Angola. The conference also featured exhibition stands from sponsors, facilitating direct engagement with delegates.
The ACL Conference 2023 was particularly beneficial for practicing lawyers, in-house counsel, dispute resolvers, consultants, experts, employers, investors, contracting organizations, and academics involved in the construction sector. The event provided a platform to gain insights into current trends, share experiences, and explore solutions to the challenges facing construction law and infrastructure projects across Africa.
