AI’s Implications for Equitable Access to Legal and Other Professional Services
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences hosted a virtual event titled "AI’s Implications for Equitable Access to Legal and Other Professional Services" on May 10, 2023. This session explored how advanced AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Bing Chat, are influencing the accessibility, reliability, and regulation of legal and other professional services, including healthcare, for underserved communities.
The discussion featured insights from Jason Barnwell, General Manager and Associate General Counsel for Digital Transformation at Microsoft; Margaret Hagan, Executive Director of the Legal Design Lab and Lecturer at Stanford Law School; and Andrew M. Perlman, Dean of Suffolk University Law School. They examined the rapidly evolving capabilities of AI and their potential impact on the delivery of professional services to the public.
The event was moderated by David W. Oxtoby, President of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. The session was conducted via Zoom videoconference, accommodating participants across different time zones.
This event was part of the Academy's "Making Justice Accessible: Designing Legal Services for the 21st Century" project, which aims to develop national recommendations for closing the justice gap between the demand for legal services and their availability.
