The Competition on Legal Information Extraction and Entailment (COLIEE) is an annual event dedicated to advancing the field of legal information processing. Organized by a collaborative team from the University of Alberta, Shizuoka University, the National Institute of Informatics, and Hokkaido University, COLIEE brings together researchers and practitioners to tackle challenges in legal document analysis and understanding.

COLIEE 2023 featured four main tasks: two focused on case law and two on statute law. The case law tasks included legal case retrieval, which involved extracting supporting cases for a new case decision, and legal case entailment, requiring the identification of specific paragraphs from existing cases that support the decision of a new case. The statute law tasks encompassed retrieving relevant statutes to answer yes/no legal questions and confirming the entailment of these answers based on the retrieved statutes.

Participants had the opportunity to engage in practical applications of their research, present their findings, and collaborate with peers in the field. The event also included workshops and discussions aimed at fostering innovation and addressing current challenges in legal information processing.

COLIEE is ideal for legal professionals, researchers, and technologists interested in the intersection of law and artificial intelligence. Attendees gain insights into cutting-edge methodologies, network with experts, and contribute to the advancement of legal technology solutions.
