Hong Kong Legal Week 2023: Rule of Law for the Future

Hong Kong Legal Week 2023, themed "Onward & Forward: Connecting the World," was a five-day event organized by the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Held from November 6 to 10, 2023, the event brought together over 11,000 participants from more than 50 jurisdictions, including legal professionals, academics, and industry leaders, to discuss and promote international legal cooperation and the rule of law.

The event featured a series of summits, panel discussions, and forums covering a wide range of topics. Key sessions included the 5th UNCITRAL Asia Pacific Judicial Summit, discussions on mediation and arbitration, and explorations of opportunities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative. The final day focused on "Rule of Law for the Future," emphasizing the role of legal services in supporting Hong Kong's development as outlined in the National 14th Five-Year Plan.

Notable speakers included the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Mr. John Lee; the Secretary for Justice, Mr. Paul Lam, SC; and Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr. Liu Guangyuan. The event also introduced a special session titled "National Security Chatroom: You ask, I answer," where the Secretary for Justice addressed questions and clarified misunderstandings about the Hong Kong National Security Law.

Hong Kong Legal Week 2023 was designed for legal professionals, academics, industry leaders, and students interested in the latest developments in international legal cooperation and the rule of law. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with experts, participate in discussions on pressing legal topics, and network with peers from around the world.
