The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Trial Academy is a five-day intensive program designed to enhance the courtroom skills of new and young attorneys. Held from March 11 to March 15, 2023, at Syracuse University College of Law, this annual event offers participants a comprehensive learning experience through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice sessions.
Each morning features lectures covering critical aspects of the trial process, including jury selection, opening statements, evidence presentation, ethics, objections, direct and cross-examinations, trial motions, and closing arguments. In the afternoons, attendees break into small groups to apply these concepts in practical exercises, receiving personalized feedback from experienced faculty members. Participants work with both civil and criminal fact patterns, preparing for various trial scenarios to develop a well-rounded skill set.
Beyond the structured sessions, the Trial Academy provides valuable networking opportunities. Events such as the Welcome Cocktail Reception allow attendees to connect with peers, faculty, and seasoned practitioners, fostering professional relationships that extend beyond the program. The inclusion of real jurors in mock voir dire exercises and the presence of sitting judges offering insights further enrich the learning environment.
This program is ideal for attorneys in the early stages of their careers seeking to build confidence and competence in trial advocacy. By engaging in direct participation and receiving constructive critiques, attendees gain practical skills and insights that are immediately applicable in their legal practices.
