Raising the Bar: The Future of Voting Rights in New Jersey and Beyond

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) is hosting "Raising the Bar: The Future of Voting Rights in New Jersey and Beyond," a 90-minute virtual panel event scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. This event aims to address the current state and future of voting rights within New Jersey and across the United States.

The panel will explore the erosion of federal voting protections and discuss emerging tools and strategies to expand ballot access and political power. Topics will include the impact of recent Supreme Court decisions, such as Shelby County v. Holder and Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee, on the Voting Rights Act, and how states can proactively advance and enforce voting rights.

Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way will provide opening remarks, highlighting New Jersey's efforts to enhance ballot access. The panel, moderated by ACLU-NJ Staff Attorney Liza Weisberg, features esteemed experts: Yael Bromberg, Principal at Bromberg Law LLC; Sophia Lin Lakin, Director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project; Henal Patel, Law and Policy Director at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice; Michael Pernick, Redistricting Counsel at the Legal Defense Fund; and Caren E. Short, Director of Legal and Research at the League of Women Voters of the U.S.

This event is designed for legal professionals, policymakers, advocates, and citizens interested in the future of voting rights.
