Special Lecture on Fostering Innovation, Production and Access to Pharmaceutical Products in Developing Countries

The DPIIT IPR Chair at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is organizing a special lecture titled "Fostering Innovation, Production and Access to Pharmaceutical Products in Developing Countries." The lecture will be delivered by Prof. William W. Fisher, WilmerHale Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Harvard Law School, on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 6:30 pm at the Bangalore International Centre (BIC). This event is open to the public, with mandatory RSVP.

Prof. Fisher will address the critical challenge of ensuring access to affordable, high-quality pharmaceutical products in developing countries, particularly in the Global South. Drawing on historical insights, including responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, he will discuss potential initiatives to foster local pharmaceutical innovation and production without necessitating changes to existing international intellectual property obligations. The lecture will present legal and economic strategies to build sustainable infrastructure for local pharmaceutical industries, while considering the perspectives of both proponents and critics of intellectual property rights.

WilmerHale Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Harvard Law School

Prof. William Fisher is the WilmerHale Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Harvard Law School. He has taught at Harvard since 1984 and is the director of Global Access in Action, a non-profit organization focused on improving public health in low and middle-income countries.
