Hon. Tanya R. Kennedy serves as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, having been appointed to the court in July 2020. Her judicial journey began in January 2006 and encompasses nineteen years of service. Justice Kennedy’s experience spans several New York courts, including Criminal Court, Civil Court—where she also served as Supervising Judge in New York County—Family Court, and Supreme Court. Justice Kennedy is deeply committed to legal education, as reflected in her role as an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law. Her dedication extends beyond the bench through her leadership and professional service. She has held various positions, including Immediate Past Presiding Member of the Judicial Section of the New York State Bar Association, President of the National Association of Women Judges, and member of the Board of Overseers of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, her alma mater. Justice Kennedy is a frequent speaker at various conferences and has received numerous awards for her achievements. Among these honors are the 2025 DEI Champion Award from Women in eDiscovery, the 2024 Professor William Hamilton Leadership Award from the University of Florida’s 11th Annual E-Discovery Conference, the 2023 Metropolitan Black Bar Association Jurist of the Year Award, and the 2022 Award of Recognition from the New York Women’s Bar Association.
