Voting Rights in Tennessee: A Discussion of Fisher v. Hargett and Other Voting Rights Issues

The Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) is hosting an event titled "Voting Rights in Tennessee: A Discussion of Fisher v. Hargett and Other Voting Rights Issues." This program aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the Fisher v. Hargett case and its implications for voting rights within the state.

Attendees will explore key topics such as the legal challenges surrounding voting rights, the impact of recent court decisions on electoral processes, and ongoing efforts to ensure fair access to voting in Tennessee. The event will feature discussions led by experienced legal professionals with expertise in constitutional law and civil rights.

This program is designed for attorneys, legal scholars, policymakers, and individuals interested in the complexities of voting rights law. Participants will gain valuable insights into current legal debates and practical strategies for addressing voting rights issues in their professional practice.

Amy Willoughby Bryant

Director at Office of Conservatorship Management, Metro Davidson County

Amy Willoughby Bryant has a heart for public service and leadership. Amy’s work has been a reflection of her professionalism and passion during her many years of legal practice. Amy is excited to serve Metro Davidson County and Nashville’s community of individuals with a disability as the Office of Conservatorship Management Director. She views this as a tremendous opportunity to combine her professional expertise with her passion for protecting Nashville’s vulnerable adults. Prior to this position, Amy served as Senior Attorney for the Division of TennCare, as a second level manager and she was responsible for creating training materials, giving presentations and helping to develop a resource bank for the administrative appeals unit.

Hon. Jeffrey Usman

Judge at Tennessee Court of Appeals

Jeffrey Usman is the newest member of the Tennessee Court of Appeals. He earned his bachelor's degree from Georgetown University, his J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School, and his LL.M. from Harvard Law School. He clerked for Judge W. Harold Albritton of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama and Judge Mary Beck Briscoe of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He also previously served as a career clerk for Justice William C. Koch, Jr. of the Tennessee Supreme Court and as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Tennessee. Most recently, he was professor at the Belmont University College of Law for over a decade. At Belmont, he taught constitutional law related courses and was recognized 5 times with a best professor award.

Tricia Herzfeld

Attorney at Herzfeld, Suetholz, Gastel, Leniski, and Wall PLLC

Tricia Herzfeld is a 2001 graduate of George Washington University Law School. Ms. Herzfeld focuses her practice on the criminal defense of immigrants, Padilla counseling and constitutional law. Before joining Ozment Law in 2012, Ms. Herzfeld served as legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, where she successfully litigated dozens of high-profile civil rights cases in state and federal courts. Ms. Herzfeld previously was also a public defender in Miami, where she conducted over 80 criminal trials. Ms. Herzfeld is a graduate of the 2010 Tennessee Bar Association Leadership Law program and a member of the Tennessee Bar Association's Continuing Legal Education Committee. She is a frequent lecturer on a variety of civil rights and civil liberties issues. Ms. Herzfeld is also a member of the Legal Advisory Board of the Workers' Dignity Project and is an ACLU-TN Cooperating Attorney. She is licensed to practice law in Tennessee (active), Florida (inactive) and West Virginia (inactive). In 2012, she was selected as one of the nation's Super Lawyers, and among those with that honor, she attained Rising Star status in 2013. Ms. Herzfeld also serves on the Davidson County Election Commission.
