Emojis, Memes, & GIFs in Court 2025 is a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program organized by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI). This on-demand video course, recorded in October 2025, addresses the increasing presence of digital expressions like emojis, memes, and GIFs in legal proceedings and their implications for attorneys and the judiciary.

The program features two distinguished legal scholars. Eric Goldman, Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Law at Santa Clara University School of Law, delves into the legal interpretations of emojis, their frequency in litigation, and practical tips for handling emoji evidence. Stacey Lantagne, Professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School, examines the contextual meanings of memes and GIFs, their potential as jokes or serious threats, First Amendment considerations, and copyright implications.

This course is designed for legal professionals seeking to enhance their understanding of modern digital communication forms in the courtroom. Participants will gain insights into the nuances of interpreting and presenting such evidence, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of digital expressions in legal contexts.

Eric Goldman is a leading expert on Internet law, focusing on topics such as emoji law and digital communication in legal contexts. He has conducted numerous trainings for judges about emojis and authored the 2018 paper 'Emojis and the Law'.

Stacey Lantagne

Professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School
