IP Transactions Course 2025

by Institute of Brand and Innovation Law at UCL Faculty of Laws

The IP Transactions Course 2025 is a comprehensive five-day program designed to equip legal professionals with the essential skills and knowledge required for handling intellectual property (IP) transactions. Organized by the Institute of Brand and Innovation Law at UCL Faculty of Laws, this course offers an in-depth exploration of the legal and practical aspects of IP agreements.

Participants will delve into key topics such as the IP facets of mergers and acquisitions, information technology contracts, agreements within the life sciences sector, contracts involving universities and government bodies, and agreements pertinent to the media and consumer goods industries. The curriculum encompasses all primary types of IP—including patents, copyrights, database rights, registered and unregistered designs, trademarks, and confidential information—as well as various IP transactions like licensing, assignment, and the sale of IP products. Additionally, the course addresses critical areas of commercial law that impact IP transactions, including competition law, insolvency, and taxation.

The course structure includes daily lectures on pertinent legal and commercial topics, interactive discussions on legal and commercial practices, and practical workshops where participants engage with real-world documents such as draft agreements and due diligence reports. A reading list is provided prior to the course to ensure attendees have a foundational understanding of relevant IP and contract subjects. Social events and study groups are also organized to foster networking and collaborative learning among peers and industry experts.

This course is primarily tailored for practitioners in the early stages of their careers in IP transactions, particularly qualified English solicitors and barristers with up to two years of post-qualification experience. However, it is also beneficial for more experienced practitioners, patent attorneys, trademark attorneys, licensing executives, and overseas practicing lawyers seeking to deepen their understanding of English law in this domain. Attendees will gain both academic rigor and practical insights, enhancing their proficiency in drafting, negotiating, and advising on IP agreements.
