AI, Animals and the Law Conference
by George Washington University Law School's Animal Law Program
The "AI, Animals and the Law Conference" is a pioneering event organized by the George Washington University Law School's Animal Law Program, in collaboration with Three Pearls Charities. This three-day conference, held from November 7 to 9, 2025, brings together animal advocates, legal professionals, and artificial intelligence experts to explore the intersection of AI technologies and animal law.
The conference features a series of panels and discussions covering a wide range of topics. Sessions include an introduction to AI, animal ethics, and animal law; current regulations of AI, with a focus on the European Union's AI Act and developments in the United States and Australia; and innovative applications like the "Tiger ID" project, which utilizes AI to identify individual big cats to aid in enforcing the Big Cat Public Safety Act. Other panels address the use of AI in legal practices, the impact of AI on the environment, and advancements in AI applications aimed at replacing live animals in research labs.
In addition to the panels, the conference includes a hackathon where teams of AI and animal law experts collaborate to develop AI tools designed to support animal advocacy efforts. Projects from the hackathon include applications for automating Freedom of Information Act requests, monitoring enforcement records related to farmed animals, and tracking permits for large agricultural complexes to prevent potential animal welfare violations.
This conference is ideal for legal professionals, animal advocates, AI technologists, and policymakers interested in understanding and shaping the role of artificial intelligence in animal law and welfare. Attendees will gain valuable insights into current challenges and opportunities at the nexus of AI and animal protection, as well as practical tools and strategies to advance their work in this evolving field.
