An ER for the Rule of Law: Lawyering in an Era of Democratic Erosion

The University of Illinois Chicago's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is hosting a lecture titled "An ER for the Rule of Law: Lawyering in an Era of Democratic Erosion" as part of the Bruno and Sallie Pasquinelli Constitutional Conversations Lecture Series. The event features Sonia Mittal, Ph.D., a clinical lecturer in law and associate research scholar at Yale Law School.

Dr. Mittal will discuss the challenges and responsibilities of legal professionals in maintaining the rule of law during times of democratic decline. The lecture will explore strategic litigation, advocacy, and public awareness initiatives aimed at upholding constitutional principles.

The event is scheduled for April 2, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM, followed by a reception until 1:30 PM. It will take place in the Illinois Rooms of Student Center East at 750 S. Halsted St., Chicago, IL 60607. The lecture will also be livestreamed via Zoom. Parking vouchers will be available for the Halsted Street Parking Structure at 760 W. Taylor Street.

This lecture is particularly relevant for legal professionals, scholars, and students interested in constitutional law and the preservation of democratic institutions. Attendees will gain insights into the role of lawyering in addressing and mitigating democratic erosion.

Sonia Mittal

Clinical Lecturer in Law and Associate Research Scholar in Law at Yale Law School

Sonia Mittal is a clinical lecturer in law and associate research scholar in law at Yale Law School, where she teaches the Peter Gruber Rule of Law Clinic. Previously, she served as senior counsel and assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, overseeing major Department of Justice investigations, and as a trial attorney in the antitrust division's national criminal enforcement section. Mittal clerked for Judge Denise L. Cote in the Southern District of New York and Chief Judge Robert A. Katzmann in the 2nd Circuit. Her academic work has been published in various law reviews and journals.
