Helsinki Animal Law Conference 2026: Reimagining Justice Across Species

by Helsinki Animal Law Centre

The Helsinki Animal Law Conference 2026, titled "Reimagining Justice Across Species," is organized by the Helsinki Animal Law Centre in collaboration with the REBOUND and LEGACY projects. Scheduled for June 8-10, 2026, at the University of Helsinki, Finland, this fourth edition of the conference aims to explore the intersection of human, animal, and environmental justice, emphasizing the role of animal law scholarship and advocacy in the Anthropocene era.

Key topics include emerging frameworks such as Rights of Nature, Multispecies Justice, and One Rights; the impact of the polycrisis—encompassing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—on various species; the effects of the green transition on different species; indigenous and non-Western perspectives; synergies between animal law and other social justice movements; innovative approaches to animal litigation and advocacy; and discussions on animal agency and representation.

The conference will feature a PhD workshop on June 8, providing early-career scholars an opportunity to present and discuss their research in a supportive environment. Additionally, a Tom Regan Memorial Lecture and roundtable discussion on animal rights will be held on the evening of June 8 at Maijansali, Helsinki Central Library Oodi, and will also be streamed online.

This event is ideal for scholars, practitioners, and advocates in animal law, environmental law, and related fields who are interested in interdisciplinary discussions on justice across species. Attendees will benefit from engaging with leading experts, participating in thought-provoking sessions, and networking with peers dedicated to advancing justice for all beings.
