The 2026 NYSBA Trial Academy is an intensive, hands-on trial skills program designed for new and young attorneys aiming to enhance their courtroom confidence and competence. Organized by the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) in collaboration with the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA), this four-day academy will take place from October 14 to 17, 2026, in Albany, New York.
Participants will engage in a comprehensive curriculum covering essential trial techniques, including jury selection, opening statements, direct and cross-examinations, evidence presentation and objections, impeachment, expert witness examination, and closing arguments. The program emphasizes experiential learning through structured exercises and simulations that mirror real courtroom practice, allowing attendees to actively perform trial skills and receive personalized feedback from seasoned trial lawyers and judges.
The academy offers small group breakouts led by experienced team leaders, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages growth and peer learning. Participants will work through realistic case materials provided in advance, enhancing preparation and practical application. The program culminates in full jury trials under New York law, providing a realistic and immersive trial experience.
This program is ideal for attorneys preparing for their first trial or those seeking to sharpen foundational skills. The Trial Academy equips participants with techniques that can be immediately applied in practice, building confidence that carries into the courtroom.
