by New York State Permanent Commission on Access to Justice

The New York State Permanent Commission on Access to Justice, in collaboration with Albany Law School, hosted the 2026 Annual Law School Conference titled "Lawyering in Complex Times: Access to Justice and the Rule of Law as Foundations of Professional Identity." This virtual event took place on April 22, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Eastern Time, and was open to all, with a special emphasis on encouraging law students to participate.

The conference focused on leadership, access to justice, and the rule of law through the lens of professional identity formation. Key topics included the independence of the legal profession, service to individuals of limited means, and the duty to uphold and defend the rule of law. The agenda featured an opening plenary with a moderated discussion, followed by concurrent panels addressing themes such as enhancing access to justice through leadership, defining the rule of law, and assessing the role of access to justice in professional identity formation.

Notable speakers included the Honorable Shira A. Scheindlin and Professor Janet Sabel, who led the opening plenary session. The event also offered a post-conference debrief session focused on sustainability practices, providing attendees with the opportunity to discuss implementation strategies and network with panelists.

This conference was particularly beneficial for law students, legal educators, practitioners, and members of civil legal services organizations seeking to deepen their understanding of ethical practice, public service, and the responsibilities inherent in upholding the rule of law.
