5th Annual CIETAC Conference in Hong Kong

The 5th Annual CIETAC Conference in Hong Kong, titled "Chapter LXI: Provisions of Breakthrough," was held on October 16, 2017, at the Conrad Hotel in Hong Kong. Organized by the CIETAC Hong Kong Arbitration Center, the event attracted a full house of 200 participants from the arbitration community, including experienced arbitrators, legal practitioners, and renowned scholars from across continents. Additionally, approximately 8,000 global online attendees joined the conference via an online platform to witness the breakthroughs of CIETAC in 2017 and the international arbitration community.

The conference featured opening addresses by Mr. Rimsky Yuen SC, JP, Secretary for Justice of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr. Liu Jingdong, Vice Chairman of No.4 Civil Division at the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China; and Mr. Wang Chengjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC. Key topics included the release of the CIETAC International Investment Arbitration Rules, the establishment of the CIETAC Public-Private Partnership Dispute Arbitration Center, and the CIETAC Silk Road Arbitration Center. The event also highlighted the CIETAC Hong Kong Arbitration Center's Guidelines for Third Party Funding of Arbitration.

Practical details of the conference encompassed sessions such as "20 Minutes on CIETAC in the Year of Breakthrough," where Secretary-General Dr. Wang Wenying presented key takeaways related to the new arbitration rules and enforcement cases. Another session, "That Eureka Moment," featured panelists discussing breakthrough moments in their arbitration practices. The conference concluded with closing remarks emphasizing CIETAC's commitment to innovation and development in the field of international arbitration.

The event was particularly relevant for arbitrators, legal practitioners, scholars, and representatives from justice bureaus, trade and commerce associations, and legal associations. Attendees had the opportunity to gain insights into the latest developments in international arbitration, network with peers, and engage in discussions on challenges and solutions in the practice.
