St. John's Law Review 2020 Symposium

by St. John's Law Review

The St. John's Law Review's 2020 Symposium, titled "Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment," was organized by the St. John's Law Review, a student-run organization at St. John's University School of Law. This virtual event took place on October 23, 2020, and brought together legal scholars to explore the past, present, and future of women's rights in the United States.

The symposium featured a keynote address by Taunya Banks, the Jacob A. France Professor of Equality Jurisprudence at the University of Maryland School of Law, titled "Commemorating the Forgotten Intersection of the Fifteenth and Nineteenth Amendments." Two panel discussions were held: the first included Alissa Gomez, Kit Johnson, and Cassandra Jones Havard, moderated by Rosemary Salomone; the second featured Nora Demleitner, Mikah K. Thompson, and Nicole Ligon, moderated by Catherine Duryea. These sessions examined topics such as the historical and ongoing struggles for women's voting rights, the intersection of race and gender in the suffrage movement, and contemporary challenges to gender equality.

The event provided attendees with opportunities to engage with leading scholars in the field, fostering discussions on the evolution of women's rights over the past century and the path forward. The symposium was made possible by the generous support of David Wollmuth and Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch LLP, and was co-sponsored by various student organizations at St. John's University School of Law.

This symposium was particularly relevant for legal scholars, practitioners, students, and anyone interested in the history and future of women's rights in the United States. It offered a platform to critically assess the progress made since the ratification of the 19th Amendment and to discuss strategies for achieving greater gender equality in the future.
