by The Sedona Conference

The Sedona Conference Working Group 6 Annual Meeting 2020 was a two-day event held on February 10-11, 2020, at New York Law School in New York City. Organized by The Sedona Conference, a nonprofit research and educational institute, this meeting focused on advancing the law and policy in international electronic information management, discovery, and disclosure.

Key topics addressed during the meeting included cross-border privilege issues, international legal holds, the International Standards Organization (ISO) Code of Practice for Electronic Discovery, and dawn raids. Sessions also covered updates on cross-border discovery and investigations, data protection laws in regions such as the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and the implications of Brexit, as well as discussions on data protection enforcement actions and the impact of new technologies on cross-border discovery and data protection.

The event featured a welcome reception on the evening of February 9, providing attendees with networking opportunities. Notable speakers and dialogue leaders included experts from various legal and corporate backgrounds, such as Denise E. Backhouse from Littler Mendelson P.C., Hon. Michael M. Baylson of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and Phil Beckett from Alvarez & Marsal, among others. A corporate counsel meeting was also scheduled to discuss and benchmark cross-border transfer best practices in a more informal setting.

This meeting was particularly beneficial for legal professionals, corporate counsel, and compliance officers involved in international electronic information management and cross-border discovery. Attendees gained insights into current challenges and developments in the field, engaged in in-depth discussions with peers, and contributed to the development of best practices and guidelines in this evolving area of law.
