by Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board

The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB) is an independent agency within the U.S. government, established to ensure that privacy and civil liberties are considered in the development and implementation of laws, regulations, and policies related to terrorism.

On July 11, 2024, the PCLOB held a public forum titled "The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Counterterrorism and National Security." This event focused on the integration of AI technologies into counterterrorism and national security programs, examining the associated privacy and civil liberties implications.

The forum featured two panel discussions with experts from various fields. Notable participants included Dr. Alondra Nelson, former Acting Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Dean Souleles, former Chief Technology Advisor at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence; and Elham Tabassi, Senior Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

This event was particularly relevant for policymakers, legal professionals, technologists, and civil liberties advocates interested in the intersection of AI, national security, and privacy rights. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with leading experts and contribute to discussions shaping the future oversight of AI in national security contexts.
