Decoding the Basel AML Index

The "Decoding the Basel AML Index" webinar, held on May 6, 2025, was a collaborative effort between Fintelekt Advisory Services and the Asian Bankers Association. This session aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the Basel AML Index, a specialized risk assessment tool that evaluates countries' vulnerabilities to money laundering and terrorist financing.

The webinar delved into the methodology behind the Basel AML Index, explaining how it assesses residual risk by combining a country's vulnerabilities with the effectiveness of its mitigation measures. Key domains covered included the AML/CFT/CPF framework, corruption and bribery, financial transparency, public transparency and accountability, and political and legal risks. The session also highlighted the index's reliance on 17 publicly available indicators and its participatory methodology involving expert input and statistical validation.

Attended by participants from over 40 countries, the webinar featured insights from Kateryna Boguslavska, PhD, Project Manager of the Basel AML Index at the International Centre for Asset Recovery. Discussions emphasized the practical applications of the index for financial institutions, regulators, and policymakers, including benchmarking internal risk models, preparing for regulatory inspections, and identifying areas with deficiencies to allocate resources effectively.
